The rest of the afternoon and early evening was spent in entertaining Jake. Once he had been bathed and read a story and tucked into bed, Simone didn’t quite know what to do with herself. She meandered into her bedroom, took another look at the dress and then cast a critical eye over her reflection in the wardrobe mirror. Dressed as she was in burgundy corduroy trousers and a baggy, patterned jumper, it was difficult to reconcile the two images. She traced the plunging neckline and shook her head despondently. Lovely as it was, she knew it just wasn’t her. Since that night when Jenny and the girls had somehow managed to convince her into a short black number that had left little to the imagination Simone had lived in loose, baggy, practical outfits. This was far too glamorous, far too eye-catching.

Simone closed the wardrobe door. She wouldn’t have the nerve to wear such a dress, not in a room full of strangers and certainly not in front of Travis Steele.
